Maison Bengal was founded in 2004 after Sheenagh Day returned from living in Dhaka, Bangladesh. After several years spent working in the aid industry, Sheenagh was not only witness to the extreme level of poverty, but also to the exceptional weaving and basketmaking skills in some of the country’s poorest areas. In direct response, she decided to create a fairtrade company on her return to the UK to support mothers and young women in some of Bangladesh’s most marginalised communities. After more than 18 years of operation, Maison Bengal is today proud to collaborate with over five thousand women – each of whom can happily work from her home environment. Using only locally grown natural materials such as jute and hogla (local sea-grass), Maison Bengal designs a wide range of products from bags to seating, tableware, floor mats, and dog baskets.
