Mapache

It was during a trip to Mexico in 2013 when Jonathan Antunes first discovered the country’s traditional braided leather sandals known as huaraches. He instantly fell in love with their intricate design and the idea for Mapache was born. Fast-forward several months and Jonathan accompanied by his friend and now business partner François-Xavier are heading back to Mexico in search of the country’s best huarache craftspeople. By the end of the year, the duo had their very first men’s collection which would later be joined by a women’s collection in 2017. Today, the French brand works closely with over 40 Mexican artisans who are able to live off their craft, and in so doing, preserve an ancient tradition. Mapache remains true to the sandal’s customary design but gives it a contemporary twist through a fashion-forward colour palette as well as suede and metallic finishes.
