When the world turned on its head in 2020, Mariana Figueiredo found herself wondering about her professional future. For some time, the French design graduate had wanted to launch a project anchored in sustainability and ethical production. So, when the opportunity presented itself in the summer of 2020, she launched Nunamae, with a collection of recycled cotton rugs made by Portuguese artisans. Using cotton waste recovered from local textile factories, the rugs are all handmade in small quantities on wooden looms, using ancestral techniques that do not require electricity or water. Their design is minimalist and functional, featuring elegant lines and natural tones that are easy to incorporate in a variety of interior décor styles. What’s more, each one is entirely machine washable and hypoallergenic – a plus for the whole family!
