The last few years have been marked by the arrival of a new creative impetus and by new aesthetic standards. In fashion, beauty and design, individuality, nonconformity and singularity have taken the place of the perfect, the uniform and the ‘normal’. Breaking away from the status quo, finding beauty in what’s different and accepting the rough edges has become the name of the game. Not only has this new way of thinking seen the rise of marketing campaigns that are more inclusive than ever before, but the trend has also crept into the design world, where creatives are embracing the unusual and the peculiar, as can be seen in Smallable’s eclectic and Green selections of products. We take a close up look at the trend that’s turning the tables on uniformity.

The Lovers, the Empress, the Fool, the Hanged Man, Death, Temperance… References to Tarot Gods are everywhere in the collections of Christian Dior, who was known for his fascination with the art of divination. Maria Grazia Chiuri, artistic director of Dior now draws inspiration from the legacy of this man who wielded fortune-telling cards like no one else. Characterised by its supernatural beauty, the founder’s pronounced taste for the arcane and the mystic is still an integral part of the fashion house today.

Designers are also filling their collections and fashion shows with pyramids, Eyes of Horus and sun symbolism, evocative of Ancient Egyptian myths and beliefs. The Balmain man has been given the Tutankhamun treatment in gold detailing, mystical symbols and ethereal shapes while Givenchy, Chanel and Andrew GN’s women are transformed into modern Cleopatras.

The moon is often associated with femininity and even more so thanks to the recent rise of lunar symbolism in womenswear. Faced with an uncertain future, the new generation is not only re-appropriating astrology and its symbolic meanings, but also tarot cards and their ethereal visions. At Urban Outfitters and Anthropology, ancient tarot illustrations can be found printed across their range of apparel and homeware.
