The Lovers, the Empress, the Fool, the Hanged Man, Death, Temperance… References to Tarot Gods are everywhere in the collections of Christian Dior, who was known for his fascination with the art of divination. Maria Grazia Chiuri, artistic director of Dior now draws inspiration from the legacy of this man who wielded fortune-telling cards like no one else. Characterised by its supernatural beauty, the founder’s pronounced taste for the arcane and the mystic is still an integral part of the fashion house today.

Designers are also filling their collections and fashion shows with pyramids, Eyes of Horus and sun symbolism, evocative of Ancient Egyptian myths and beliefs. The Balmain man has been given the Tutankhamun treatment in gold detailing, mystical symbols and ethereal shapes while Givenchy, Chanel and Andrew GN’s women are transformed into modern Cleopatras.

The moon is often associated with femininity and even more so thanks to the recent rise of lunar symbolism in womenswear. Marine Serre – a.k.a. the supernatural queen – is leading the trend by delicately stamping her collections with crescent moons, which have, in just a few years become as emblematic as they have enigmatic.

From its effect on the tides to its hidden face, the moon will never lose its alluring mystique. Its gravitational forces are drawing in designers the world over who are embracing its magical character to offer the same occult aesthetic to their pieces. From tables to lights, bags and jewellery… the moon eclipses all other heavenly bodies and continues to hypnotise us with its changing silhouette.

Channelling a spirit from another world, jewellery designers at Gucci, Maje, Givenchy and PDPAOLA are using precious stones and zodiac signs to reference astrology in their pieces. From Scorpio to Pisces, Libra and Gemini, the fortune telling aesthetic is back in fashion, designed to be worn ostentatiously to reveal one’s personal aspirations and intuitions.

A cosmic dust also seems to have blown through the design world as creators are taking to the skies for inspiration. From Norwegian artist Laurie Poast’s sculptures to Bentu Design’s pendant lamps and tables by David/Nicolas, interior décor is being taken on an interplanetary journey.

Quartz, jade, agate... Touted for their positive energies, precious stones are also making their big comeback in the wellness landscape. These raw natural products are quickly becoming a must-have in beauty routines in what seems to be a widespread movement towards more holistic cosmetics and a revival of ancestral techniques.
